Clare Cowley

Clare is interested in a person’s unique cognitive activity and how it directs certain ideas and behaviours. She explores this through observing and painting people and landscapes, memory painting/drawing and documenting her dream state. Ernest Hemmingway observed how everyday people, intently engaged in their work could inspire his own sense of focus. The explorations of simultaneity by the Futurists fuel her interest in the idea of interaction and the relationships between objects and people. Clare practices seeing subjects without fixed ideas to encourage an awareness of a language external from what she knows. Her trust in already acquired knowledge of human behaviour and the forms of the landscape and interiors/exteriors help her to interpret this language. Using colour and line accidentally and at other times specifically choosing the medium or composition to suit her intuitive reaction to a subject, Clare’s compositions have a strong sense of the continuous in relationships between body, mind and environment.
